Just In Case

Backseat drivers

freely fixed beyond contradictory evidence

weary of those still left “on the fence

of what remains a dependable depth of pain

skillfully deprived and carefully sustained

Implorable beauty, now heavily shamed

with rugged edges, riddled rhetorically

a past masking the fate we’ve forever tamed

“should have wrote a short story”

you’re moving on and I’m ashamed

my writings getting pretty lame

as backseat drivers take the reigns

Slurring words in open space

as you belittle the lines I wrote to replace

the armour I’ve lost,

once keeping me safe
